Monday Nights, New Voices came to an end last night after seven incredible years. I wrote this song 20 minutes prior to the concert. My voice is gone but my heart is full. Enjoy. A little segment to portray a mesh of difficult times in my life. We all get lost in a dream, thinking that it’s the only thing that ever exists, but our journey there is all that matters. Within that journey, there will always be forks in the road that seem beyond unbearable to exceed. But with faith and perseverance in God and myself, we can achieve anything and everything according to his will. This piece in particular is very self-explanitory as far as general lyrics, and all my movements contain specific meanings. I only choreographed to what made sense to me at the time, which means to you, it could just be all dance and choreography. This is Part one of my "Drake" series. As an interpretive dance of how I see Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, each of the three songs represents a different part of the play: Utterson’s talk with Enfield about Hyde and Utterson’s dreams, Jekyll’s apparent detachment from Hyde and Lanyon’s death, and Utterson’s discovery of Dr. Jekyll’s secret. The reason I chose to do an interpretive dance was for the fact that I found songs perfect for the play. Words about the night and sleeping, not being the same as someone else, and the realization of a truth all enveloped the understanding of the play. My actions in the dance also have many meanings; some parts are meant to reenact what happened during the play, other parts are a little more symbolic. The hands represent the transformation from Jekyll to Hyde, but more importantly, it represents the conflict between the good and evil inside of people as seen with the dance sequence of Utterson’s dream. The body language of parts of the dance also help define my interpretation of those parts of the play such as during the second song, the body moves are happier as this is portraying Dr. Jekyll’s happiness of having rid of Hyde, but that soon changes at the end of the song when Lanyon dies from shock and Jekyll realizes his fate. The dramatic ending with Utterson’s discovery of the body and letters leads him to complete understanding of the situation as shown with the joining of the fingers as I kneel while gazing at the lost Dr. Jekyll. Transcript Below: Have you ever had a day, when you wake up, get out of bed, put on your alligator skin socks, and swim to school? Chances are, you have, and chances are it was a dream. Sleep is a predictable pattern every night. Each sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes, beginning with NREM sleep, where your bodily activity is at the absolute minimum. Four types of brainwaves course through our brain, each one leading into another. Stage 1, alpha waves mingle with the beta waves. That means you’re going unconscious. Stage 2, alpha waves dominate yours existing beta waves and send you deep into sleep. Stage 3 is called Slow Wave sleep, where 20% of your brainwaves are delta waves. Stage 4 begins when 50% is delta waves. After about 40 minutes in stage 4, we regress through the stages, ending up back at Stage 1, but this time in REM sleep. The most highly active brain state, your breathing becomes irregular and your body paralyzes itself to keep from damage. This is a piece I did for my Colour Theory class in college, part of the assignment was that we needed to document our progress so I took this series of photographs and compiled them together and thought I should share. The project was to choose a colour and paint a piece where the symbolism goes beyond the object by using colour and researching the hidden meanings behind certain colours. I chose green and tried to focus on how in self>dream interpretation a green snake usually represents the beginning of a journey in ones life and depending on the shade of green the out come of this journey will either be positive or negative.
